Quantifying the eddy-jet feedback strength of the annular mode in an idealized GCM and reanalysis data

چکیده
The strength of the eddy-jet feedback in the midlatitude atmosphere is important for both internal variability and response to external forcing. A linear response function (LRF) that relates the temporal tendency of zonal mean temperature and zonal wind to their anomalies and external forcing is used to quantify the strength of the eddy-jet feedback associated with the annular mode in an idealized GCM. Following a classic simple feedback model, the results confirm the presence of a positive eddy-jet feedback in the annular mode dynamics, with a feedback strength of 0.083 day−1. Statistical methods proposed by earlier studies to quantify the feedback strength are evaluated against the result from the LRF, and it is shown that results of the previous methods are interfered by the quasi-oscillatory nature of the eddy forcing. A new method based on low-pass filtering is employed to reduce the interference from the spectral peak of eddy forcing at synoptic timescales, and the feedback strength is approximated by the regression coefficient of low-pass filtered eddy forcing on low-pass filtered zonal index, which converges to the value produced by the LRF when timescales longer than 200 days are used for the low-pass filtering. Different statistical methods are then applied to Southern Hemisphere reanalysis data. The feedback strength estimated using the new low-pass filtering method is 0.053 day−1, which is argued to be an improvement over previous estimates. The present study provides a framework to quantify the eddy-jet feedback strength in models and reanalysis data.

متن کاملQuantifying the Eddy Feedback and the Persistence of the Zonal Index in an Idealized Atmospheric Model
An idealized atmospheric model is employed to quantify the strength of the eddy feedback and the persistence of the zonal index. The strength of the surface frictional damping on the zonal index is varied, and an external zonal momentum forcing is included to compensate for the momentum change associated with the friction change such that the climatological jet latitude and shape are unchanged....
متن کاملBaroclinic anomalies associated with the Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode: Roles of synoptic and lowfrequency eddies
[1] Using the ERA-40 reanalysis data, we study the different roles of synoptic and low-frequency eddies in sustaining the latitudinal shift of the low-level baroclinicity associated with the Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode. The eddy effect is assessed through the direct eddy thermal forcing via eddy heat flux and the indirect forcing via eddy-driven mean meridional circulation (MMC). We find t...

An idealized atmospheric general circulation model is used to investigate the factors controlling the time scale of intraseasonal (10–100 day) variability of the extratropical atmosphere. Persistence on these time scales is found in patterns of variability that characterize meridional vacillations of the extratropical jet. Depending on the degree of asymmetry in the model forcing, patterns take...

Eddy–zonal flow interactions in the annular modes are investigated in this study using a modified beta-plane multilayer quasigeostrophic (QG) channel model. This study shows the different response of highand lowphase-speed (frequency) eddies to the zonal wind anomalies and suggests a baroclinic mechanism through which the two eddies work symbiotically maintaining the positive eddy feedback in t...
